Never dived before? No problem! Introductory scuba diving is the perfect way to experience the Great Barrier Reef for the very first time — no certification required. Many day trips departing from Cairns Marlin Marina offer introductory dives, making it an easy addition to your reef adventure. As this is a highly sought-after experience with limited dive spots available, booking in advance is strongly recommended.

On arrival at the vessel, you’ll be provided with the required paperwork, including a medical questionnaire that must be completed and cleared before diving. While cruising out to the first reef site, your dive instructor will conduct a comprehensive dive briefing and training session. As a group, you’ll then complete the remaining forms together, ensuring everyone feels confident and prepared before entering the water.

Once you arrive at the reef site and are fully geared up, you’ll enter the water in a small group with your dive instructor. The experience begins with simple in-water skills to help you adjust and feel comfortable, before gradually descending together as a connected group to explore the vibrant coral gardens and marine life below.

F & Qs for your first time Scuba

Can I Take an underwater camera or phone on my first dive?

You need to have your full attention on your dive master and watch out for their instructions, which is all signed - as you can't talk underwater!

Can I fly within the next 12 hours after I dive?

No, you will not be able to fly until after 12 hours time.

How deep will I go on my first dive?

You will get to around 6-10 Meters (20-30 Feet) aproximately depending on the tour company you travel with and the depth of their sites.

How long will the dive go for?

After the briefings on board, it is aproximately 20-30 minutes of water time.

Want to experience the reef without swimming or diving skills? Helmet diving - lets you walk along a platform or the ocean floor while breathing normally through a specially designed helmet. This unique experience is ideal for non-swimmers, families, or anyone who prefers to stay upright while still getting face-to-face with reef life... and you don't even get your hair wet!

Reef Magic & Sunlover Helmet Dives - Seawalker with Great Adventures on Green Island

The same as an Introductory Dive, on arrival at the vessel, you’ll be provided with the required paperwork, including a medical questionnaire that must be completed and cleared before diving. While cruising out to the reef site, your dive instructor will conduct a comprehensive dive briefing and training session.

While Helmet Diving experiences may sound similar, the setting makes all the difference. Reef Magic and Sunlover Reef Cruises offer helmet dives at outer reef pontoons, where you descend beneath the platform and walk along a guided underwater circuit surrounded by reef fish attracted to the structure. Green Island’s Seawalker experience with Great Adventures, on the other hand, takes place on coral reef located at Green Island in shallow lagoon waters, allowing you to walk directly on the sandy seabed among coral and marine life.

Already a Certified Diver? The Great Barrier Reef offers world-class diving across stunning outer reef locations, with excellent visibility, diverse marine life, and healthy coral systems. Certified divers can enjoy multiple dives per day, visit deeper reef sites, and explore areas not accessible to introductory divers. Many tours also offer Nitrox, night dives, and advanced dive options.

Most certified scuba diving day trips depart from Cairns Marlin Marina and typically visit two to three different reef sites in a single day, giving you plenty of time underwater. All dive equipment can be provided, or you can choose to dive with tanks and weights only if you prefer to use your own gear. Dives are generally conducted with a dive master leading the group, although some operators offer this as an optional extra, so it’s worth checking what’s included when booking.

For those seeking exceptional reef quality, some operators depart from Crystalbrook Marina Port Douglas and travel further north to the Ribbon Reefs, located along the edge of the continental shelf. Agincourt Reef, in particular, is a standout destination for certified divers, renowned for its crystal-clear water, vibrant coral formations and consistent visibility — often 15–30 metres or more. These outer reef sites are home to an abundance of marine life, including reef sharks, turtles, large schools of fish and colourful reef species. While it means an early start and a longer journey from Cairns, the reward is some of the best diving conditions on the Great Barrier Reef — well worth the effort for certified divers.

For a more relaxed and resort-style way to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Divers Den’s liveaboard experience aboard OceanQuest feels like a floating hotel on the reef. You typically start your day on the day boat AquaQuest, cruising out to the outer reef where snorkelling and diving begin, before transferring in the afternoon to OceanQuest — your accommodation for the night. A purpose-built liveaboard has air-conditioned cabins with en-suite bathrooms, with twin or double room types. With multiple dives per day, delicious onboard meals, lounge spaces and the freedom to enjoy the reef from morning until night, it’s an ideal choice for divers and reef lovers who want a more comfortable, immersive reef adventure.
